The Scholarship Clause

Quinn Archer

About

My entire future depends on the Atherton Scholarship, a full ride to my dream university. The final interview is with the head of the endowment, the cold and calculating Mr. Davies. I walk into his imposing office prepared to discuss my academic achievements. He's not interested. He slides a piece of paper across the desk—a list of my family's debts, my precarious financial situation, all laid bare. Then he slides another paper over: the scholarship agreement, with a new, handwritten clause at the bottom. My academic performance, he tells me, is only part of the evaluation. The other part will be a series of "private tutorials" where I will be expected to show my gratitude in a more... personal way. My future is his to grant or deny, and the price is my submission.
